Beaver Lake kicked off the summer water ski season with the annual Beaver Lake Challenge on Saturday and Sunday.
About 40 skiers converged on the Gates County lake to participate with many using the weekend as a practice run for next month's North Carolina State Championships, which will also be held at Beaver Lake.
The most notable name to compete was pro slalom skier April Coble-Eller, who is currently ranked No. 5 in the world slalom standings. Coble-Eller easily won the slalom event.
"It was a great laid back weekend to kick off the 2012 season," said Beaver Lake Ski Club president Jeff Mitchell. "It was wonderful having April attend and see her ski so well."
Another highlight of the weekend was the testing of lights at the lake that will allow for nighttime jumping, which is planned for the state championships.
While cool weather and sunny skies made for a great weekend, Mitchell did have one regret.
"The only tough part of the weekend was getting beat in slalom by my daughter Kelsie," Mitchell joked.
The North Carolina State Championships will be held on July 13-15 with a special night jumping competition set for July 13 to kick off the weekend.
